In A Nutshell

It's midnight and I am at the vet with Tilly, the mother of the Malshi litter. We are having an emergency c-section due to her having a very large last puppy that just won't come out. I am getting her spayed as well. My hope at this point is that she will be able to raise the single puppy that she has right now. I will be looking for a pet home for Tilly when she finishes with this litter. She is a good girl, a liver & white Shih Tzu, 13 lbs, and very sweet.

I'm not sure how much longer I will be here. Going to be a quick night of sleep as I have to wake at a decent hour and take my friend's children to the airport so they can fly home to VA tomorrow.

Dog drama never happens at a convenient time.

No More Litterboxes....Mostly

Plain and simple, they're messy, really messy, and I was just tired of them.  I decided to take the litterboxes OUT of the mama nursing pens, and just let the mamas out several times a day to go potty.  This has worked so well I don't know why I didn't do it sooner.  No more sawdust on the beds, much easier to launder, and everything just seems so much cleaner without the dust!  I'm loving it!

The mama dogs are still using a litterbox, it's just outside their nursing areas now.  We will be introducing UGODOG to the babies at 6-7 weeks old and will continue until they're in their new homes.  I love working in the nursery now, country music playing, and since there's no more dust, I'm taking my mini tramp out there for exercise.  The dogs and I are going to jump, dance, and rock out to country music every day now!!

As They Grow - Gracie - Blenheim Cavachon

I believe this is the smallest Cavachon that we have produced here at SPK.  As  rule, we do not get 10 lb Cavachons, but more in the 15-20 lb range.  But this tiny little pup/dog is a bundle of energy and talent!  Meet Gracie, a Blenhein Cavachon!

Hi Kristy,

I can not believe it has been a year since I called you and picked out Gracie- we spoke 4th of July weekend last year and I saw the "white eared girl" and I knew she was the one for me. At the time someone else had a deposit on her, but changed their mind. I was thrilled. She has brought me such joy and has changed my life in so many ways- she is my greatest teacher! We run agility and hope to compete next year, as long as she enjoys it. She is a sweetie to all, and eventually we will be delta certified as a therapy dog too.

Anyway, I am sending on some pictures of her for your blog/website as you had requested some adult pictures. She is probably the smallest cavachon you have had at SPK at 10.5 pounds. The range in the littler went I think up to 22#? Enjoy- I will send in multiple emails, as it is easiest from this end, and I do not want to bog down your internet!

I hope you have a happy 4ht of July and I love to hear about you, your family, and the puppies at SPK!

Blessings to you!

L. and Gracie

Such a cute little girl!  Thanks so much L. for sharing her photos!

(I think I have a puppy photo to add to this blog, but have to get it out of my email still!)

As They Grow - Nikki - Blenheim Cavachon

Hi Kristy!

Here is a photo of Nikki taken the week I brought her home. If my memory serves me, she was born on June 17th, 2009 and this photo was taken on August 7, 2009. I also attached a picture of her at one year.

Hope it helps. If there is something else you need, please let me know.

She weighs about 23 pounds. I love her size, look, personality, sweetness, energy, disposition, etc. etc. etc. She is a hundred laughs a day!!!

L. O.

I forgot how pretty this puppy was, and how much color she had!

It is common for the Blenheim color to lighten up, but Nikki still has a lot of great color on her body, though it's just softer looking now!  What a pretty girl!

2years old!!

Thank you L.O. for sharing!!

As They Grow - Mindy - Black Cavachon

I am beginning a series on my blog called "As They Grow" which will feature pictures of puppies, and then that same dog as an adult, so people can see how they grow, what happens with their coat colors, textures, and the general size of the puppies.  People are often asking me for adult photos, so this will fill that need as well as be a fun place where previous buyers can show off their new little family members!  I will also italicize the letters from my buyers as they often have something wonderful to say about their puppies!  Enjoy!

Here are some young pics of Mindy when she was still at Silver Paws so
buyers can compare - the last one is the day we picked her up from you at
10.5 weeks old. J

Here she is!  They both had a sort of swirly brown in their black coats and we were all eager to see how that would translate as adults.

Mindy is on the right in this photo.  She had that distinctive white patch above her nose!

Now Mindy is on the left!

She was a little older when she went home.  She's already quite an armload!

Here are some pictures of Mindy as an adult. She turned one on May 14th and
weighs roughly 20 lbs. The aerial view is so you can see the "salt and
pepper" look to her coat but overall the first impression is that she's a
black dog. People always commend on how soft her coat is. Her personality
is sweet and playful and smart! My favorite is her cuddles! Mindy has had
an exciting first year - besides moving to Canada and learning how to potty
outside...she's also met Cesar Millan and has aced her obedience tests for
beginner, intermediate and advanced level 1. Her instructor chose Mindy to
perform as a demonstration dog after Advance Level 1 in front of an audience
at graduation! She did very well and she is an integral part of our family.
We love her! Thank you Silver Paw Kennels!  J.

Thank you so much J. for sharing!!

Calvin & Princess, Our Dogs!

This is OUR dog!!

He is the last puppy from our Breeder named Vanna, our largest Bichon Frise.  His daddy, Ricky, is also our largest Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, and I always wanted a puppy from these two parents.  When he was a single puppy litter, and a rare, golden/apricot color, I knew he was ours to keep!!

He loves to smile for the camera!

He's always curious, like me!

This is Princess, our yard dog, Sharpei Mix.  She's Yellow too!

I'm such a sucker for yellow dogs!

She's one of the best dogs ever!

I love the variations in Calvin's coat.

He has strawberry blond highlights all over the place!  He's a great dog!

Blondie Goes to 4-H Practice

I can't get enough of this dog!  I LOVE her coloring, which of course, explains why I kept Calvin (our Golden colored Cavachon)!

I have always loved the color of a Golden Retriever!  I saw a picture once of a Golden Australian Shepard.  After doing tons of research and talking to a couple of Australian Shepard breeders, I discovered that making golden ones was risky, because it was very close to making the ones with white faces, which can often be deaf or blind.  I don't know all the genetic details, but basically, Golden Aussies were flukes, and people didn't try to make them.  So I had to give up on my dream of getting a Golden Australian Shepard.

Of course, there is always the Golden Retriever, but we had one of those once, and she was way too needy for us, needed too much attention, and we ended up finding her a lovely home where she lived a long and happy life.

So in my hunt to find a Golden Dog, I was delighted when Cavachons came out that color, although it does not happen very often.  We've been breeding Cavachons for almost 5 years now, and we have produced 4 of them, total.  I guess this post maybe should be titled "Why I Love Golden Cavachons", so I'll get back to my original intent of this post (but I will post pictures of our Calvin soon!).

"Blondie", as we have affectionately been calling her, went with us to 4-H practice on Monday.  She was well loved by everyone, and was a very good girl, sat under the bleachers while I watched, and even took a little nap.  She smiled for the camera, and looked oh so goldeny blond in these photos of her in the evening sunshine!!  Everything was going perfectly, until...

...Rico decided that he wanted to play!

That is when Blondie decided to take cover between my legs.  She did not like Rico, AT ALL.  She barked at him, growled at him, and though he thought it was all great fun, I think she was somewhat terrified of this gigantic, black puppy dog!

She did finally decide that she would sniff him a bit, but I think she's going to need some big dog socialization before she feels comfortable around them.  Rico did want to play, play, play, so maybe that was just a bit much for Blondie.  She loved playing with Calvin, but he is not even twice her size.

Overall, we had a great time at 4-H practice!!

Isn't she pretty?!!

Her chest is white, her ears are apricot, and her body is blond.

Such a sweet and precious girl!  I know she is going to make her new family very happy!

Blondie Goes to the Vet

She was a little nervous but did very well overall. She got her Rabies shot and a full vet exam. She has her Health Certificate and is ready to fly on Wednesday!

She is a love and we (and Calvin) are going to miss her!

Going Home

The smaller of Pansy's 2 female Blenheim puppies went home yesterday.  She sat right beside me the whole way to Sp*kane, didn't get sick, and was a perfect angel the entire trip!

She looked up at me so sweetly a couple of times.

And she peacefully slept!  She did not get carsick AT ALL, which was wonderful for me!!

Her new family came all the way over from the western side of WA to get her and stayed in a hotel over night!  I love the commitment people show right at the very beginning when they decide to get a puppy!

I think they named her "Abbey", which is a perfect name for her!  I received a call this morning and everything went perfectly on the ride home yesterday, and her first night at home went smoothly also!  They are thrilled with her!  I'm happy too!

"Bear"

I love getting updates from past buyers!  It always makes me happy when they let me know how things are going, and especially when the dog has become a wonderful addition to their family.  I just received this lovely email today from Kelli.
I want to add that "Bear" comes out of my two LARGEST dogs, a 23 lb Cavalier dad, Ricky, and a 20 lb Bichon Frise mom, Vanna.  He is TINY, and I would have never expected a dog his size to come out of those parents.  It proves how impossible it is for me to predict what size the puppies will be as adults.
Enjoy her letter!

Hi Kristy!

We purchased Bear from you last July. I just wanted to take the time
to write you an e-mail thanking you for him. He is such a great
addition to our family, and we just love him to pieces (especially my
husband). He's a teeny guy - 11.4 pounds, but his personality conveys
a much larger dog. He's spunky, determined, sweet and independent. Our
boys absolutely adore him. They giggle when he runs in circles around
the couch (at the speed of light I might add).

The ladies at the vet just adore him.

He's fully crate trained at night and runs around free in the house
with us during the day (accident free now for three months). He stands
at the door and whines to let me know he needs to potty (we lost our
potty bells in our recent move, so he doesn't use those anymore). He
also stays with us out back, without a leash. He's very well behaved,
except when people pass by with their dogs... he goes berserk, so
we're working on that.

We are heading to _______ next month and he'll be joining us. We
love that we can take him wherever we go as a family.

Again, many thanks!

~Kelli and Family
